Dr. Karen Tom was raised on a farm in east Texas. She completed a master’s degree in education at the University of Texas and taught school in Florida and Seattle before returning to school and graduating from medical school in San Antonio. After four years of surgery training at Swedish Hospital, she completed board certification in emergency medicine and practiced in large urban and small rural hospitals. She has previously served on the board of trustees for King County Medical Society and the Washington State Medical Association. She first worked at Snoqualmie Valley Hospital in the 1980s, then again in 1997 and currently since 2004. Until a few years ago she was part-time clinical instructor in the emergency department at the University of Washington Medical Center for 11 years. She worked for many years on the board of trustees for the Issaquah Alps Trails Club through 2012. She currently resides in Issaquah, where she has lived since 1990.
